NDA Law announces appointment of Thea Birss to head employment law practice

NDA Law has announced the appointment of Thea Birss to head the firm’s employment law practice starting this month.

Ms Birss has almost two decades of experience in all aspects of employment, industrial and discrimination law and dispute resolution.

With a background in the commercial, government and not-for-profit organisations, Thea has deep insight into the issues facing South Australian business in an ever-changing regulatory environment.

“I am delighted to be joining the team at NDA Law and plan to continue to build on the firm’s outstanding reputation for expert knowledge, a collaborative working style, and delivering outstanding commercial outcomes for clients.

Ms Birss said employment law was one of the most complex areas facing South Australian business owners.

“Navigating the complexity of employment law can be challenging. Managing the workforce within a changing regulatory environment can be a struggle, the award frameworks are constantly changing and new issues arise everyday -- it can be hard to stay on top of everything you need to know, especially if you are a small to medium-sized business.”

“Employment law is a very important area as it directly affects business operations -- ultimately it can be the company’s reputation that is at stake. It’s my job to help clients understand their obligations and to help them manage risk.”

As well as handling mediation and dispute resolution, workplace contracts, unfair dismissals and performance management issues, Ms Birss will also lead NDA Law’s new in-house workplace training program, delivering workshops to managers and business owners aimed at avoiding unnecessary legal disputes.

Ms Birss will also manage workplace issues relating to mergers and acquisitions, IP & privacy, audits and investigations, and corporate governance advisory.

She said she looks forward to working in an all-female team at NDA Law, a rather unusual demographic for a traditional law firm.

“It’s great to be working with some trailblazing women who are striving to redefine how female leaders are perceived in the legal profession.”
