Andrea Michaels makes the list in 2018 national Women in Law awards

Andrea Michaels, Managing Director of NDA Law, has made the finals in three categories of the prestigious Women in Law Awards to be announced in Melbourne next month.

The annual Women in Law awards are run by media group Lawyers Weekly and celebrate the achievements of Australian women in the legal industry. Ms Michaels made the list in the categories of Executive of the Year and Thought Leader of the Year, and NDA Law was named as a finalist in Boutique Diversity Firm of the Year.

Ms Michaels established NDA Law in 2015 and under her leadership the Adelaide firm has more than doubled its client list and now employs six people.

Ms Michaels said the awards recognised the significant contribution women make to the legal profession.

“Women represent more than 50 per cent of law graduates, yet the number of women making partner level or running their own firms is still less than 30 per cent.

“Many women can find it tough to continue to work in male-dominated areas like law, which is why a new breed of firms like mine are so important.  Building a culture at work where both men and women are supported and mentored to reach their full potential is not just good from a gender equity point of view, it’s also good for business.

“We need to look at better ways to construct the office environment to allow people to manage work and family commitments. This will only be possible if the legal profession works harder to address issues surrounding gender balance at the highest levels. Things like flexible work, parental leave and career development opportunities should be standard in all workplaces.

Ms Michaels is a well-known business identity in South Australia and sits on several local boards including the State Procurement Board, the Veterinary Surgeons Board of SA, and Fearless Theatre.  She is also the Treasurer of the Law Society of South Australia.

Her firm NDA Law continues to win national and international awards including: Best Lawyers: Commercial Law, Tax Law, and Succession Planning; Corporate LiveWire Finance Award: Best Boutique Law Firm in Australia; Finalist in SA Telstra Business Women’s Awards (Entrepreneur Award); Global Excellence Award ‘Most Influential Woman in Tax Law - Australia’; ‘Best Tax Lawyer’ International Advisory Expert Awards; finalist, 2018 Lawyers Weekly Law Awards (Best Boutique Firm) and Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards (Professional Services).

Winners of the Women in Law Awards will be announced on November 22.
